Brittney Cares Supports the Wright Family and the Fight Against Dravet Syndrome

At Brittney Cares, we are honored to support families facing extraordinary challenges. Recently, we made a donation to the Wright family, whose daughter, McCall, has Dravet syndrome, a rare and severe form of epilepsy. This brave family spent Thanksgiving at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), yet their resilience and courage continue to inspire everyone around them.

McCall was born healthy and happy in 2018 as the first of the Wrights’ two children. At just four months old, she experienced her first seizure during a routine well visit. A week later, another seizure followed, and over time, McCall has endured hundreds of seizures that have resisted countless rounds of medication. In 2020, she was on up to ten seizure medications simultaneously while convulsions and status epilepticus persisted. She had to be placed in a medically induced coma to give her brain and body rest.

The experience was terrifying for her parents, especially as her mother was eight months pregnant at the time. Fortunately, McCall came out of the coma days later without further seizures, though she faced significant challenges in the following months. She temporarily lost basic abilities such as walking, holding her head up, and swallowing thin liquids. Thanks to intensive therapy and care, McCall has regained many of these essential functions, greatly improving her quality of life.

Today, McCall continues to work tirelessly in her therapies, including Speech, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Therapy. She faces ongoing struggles with fine and gross motor function, sensory needs, mental and speech delays, and must be monitored 24/7. Because her seizures can be life-threatening, McCall cannot attend school, be in crowds, or participate in activities like her neurotypical peers. Her family also navigates the reality that she is ten times more susceptible to Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).
